Handcrafted Jewelry Guided by Material, Memory, and Meaning
A Tucson jewelry artist’s statement
My name is Lisa Sirlin-Hall, and my studio work at Sirlin Hall Jewelry explores how raw materials, traditional craft, and personal history intersect to create functional, wearable art. Every piece I make begins with tactile curiosity, drawing inspiration from the rich colors, textures, weights, and golden light of California and the American Southwest. In my Tucson, Arizona studio, these natural elements shape jewelry that invites touch and personal connection.
Materials and Traditional Process
Mixed metals, hand-fabricated gold, silver, brass, and copper, gemstones, woven textiles, and Japanese glass each bring a distinct character to my work. Rather than serving as mere ornamentation, every material is an essential component of the final composition. My process relies on traditional, time-honored techniques that keep me grounded in my craft:
Loom and off-loom bead weaving to construct textural, colorful landscapes.
Metal fabrication and wire wrapping using gold, sterling silver, copper, and brass frameworks to support the weaving.
Stone setting and assembly that honor the inherent form and weight of each gemstone and metal element.
By pairing age-old methods with unexpected material and color combinations, I aim to give older traditions and quiet techniques a fresh, modern expression that reflects a moment of delight in a complicated world.
Influence and Aesthetic Philosophy
Growing up along the West Coast and making my home in the desert Southwest shaped how I see the world and how I make jewelry. Early visits to coastal preserves, desert landscapes, historic missions, turn-of-the-century architecture, and archaeological sites taught me that materials carry stories long before they reach my workbench. Devotional artifacts, weathered structures, and found objects continue to guide my eye today.
This background defines my design philosophy: form directly informs function.
To me, a piece of jewelry is not simply decorative; it is an intimate object meant to be worn daily, grounding the wearer through tactile familiarity and shared history.
Artistry Made by Human Hands in Tucson
I design and construct every bracelet, necklace, brooch, and pair of earrings entirely by hand in my Tucson studio. Each original jewelry design (many one-of-a-kind) reflects shared places, personal memories, and the quiet desire to keep meaningful objects close.
